VS.

So i haven't updated in a few weeks.
I go through phases.

I was recently blog tagged by my friend Cindy which means I am supposed to write 6 things about me and post them to my blog then tag other people. It has been over 2 weeks and I still haven't come up with 3 things about me that are the least bit interesting. Sorry Cindy, I will keep thinking.

The biggest reason for my lack of blogging lately is blamed on books. I just finished a book last night and want to start the sequel tonight so I figure while Mason is napping and Jacob and Iree are playing with play dough... I would catch up a little on the blog. It wont happen tonight because I will be reading...

When I find a book I like, my free time is completely taken. A couple of nights ago I got the kids to bed then Mark and I talked for a couple of hours about various things, like we do most nights. He had to call Mark (yes another Mark... we know so many) and discuss the business they are creating. I noticed the book I had borrowed from my mom. I opened it and began to read... I finally stopped at 3:45 a.m. This has happened quite often in the last few years. I never knew how much I would enjoy reading. I honestly have only been reading for under 3 years. Yes, When I got my bachelors degree I had never read a book cover to cover!! Now... I would give anything to find a quiet moment to read.

So now you know... If I haven't posted for a few days, weeks, months... I must be reading.

2 "Must See" Movies

In the last few days I saw two great movies. It has been a long time since I have seen a movie worth telling everyone about.
Mark and I rarely watch movies because we make our lives so busy. In the evenings we usually work on loans, talk (which we can do for hours), or I read while Mark is on the computer or doing various other activities. For us to sit down and push play on the DVD the stars must be aligned and the movie better be good because both or us have better things to do than waist an 2 hours on a lame movie.

Return to Me (2000)

This movie was actually made in 2000 and I saw it before and liked it. My sister Heather has been talking about it ever since my brother Dave died. We searched all the movie stores and we ended up buying in on the internet. Then, my brother Andy ended up having it. Anyway, It is a movie about an organ transplant recipient. After knowing that my brother has saved at least 5 lives with his organs this movie had new meaning for me. It is super funny and very touching. Even Chuck (Heather's husband) who hates "chick flicks" liked it. I think this is a must see... loved it.

Dan in Real Life (2007)

I love The Office so I love Steve Carell. He was great in this movie. It is about a dad raising 3 daughters himself. He finds himself in a hilarious situation with a women he finally has an interest in. I will leave it at that. You have to see this one. Mark was on an appointment so I watched it myself. The credits were crossing the screen as he walked in and he found me laughing with tears in my eyes. Perfect move in my book... Makes you laugh, cry and think. A little nuts I know but even though it was after 11:00 p.m. we pushed play and I watched it with Mark again. Loved it even more the second time.

Where did all my hair go?

I have been putting off cutting Mason's hair for months. Waiting for a moment when Mark could hold him while I chopped. But, we always find more important things to do when Mark is around.
His hair was about 3 inches long and flopping over his ears... it had to go. I couldn't wait anymore. Iree distracted him by giving him peices of candy while I clipped as fast as I could.

After, Mason kept rubbing his head... I am sure if he could articulate he would have said, "Where did all my hair go?"

Reflecting on Life...post from 7 years ago

Life has calmed, I have had a chance to reflect.

The night before Dave's funeral we had a Celebration of his life. It was an amazing evening of tears, laughter and reflection. The funeral was a perfect way for us all to remember him. I have added my thoughts and hundreds of pictures in slide shows.

He was a great Brother to all of us.
As I have been reflecting this last month I have been on a roller coaster of emotions. I know that Dave's spirit is where he is doing the most good but that knowledge doesn't take away the pain I feel when I think of the family he left behind. The road ahead is long. I pray that his wonderful family will be blessed and comforted every day. As for me... I will miss his honesty, teasing, bluntness, kindness, fun and love! At the hospital the Sunday Dave died we met together in a ICU room and had family prayer. Our family is huge, and includes many close friends. We filled the room to capacity and beyond. We smashed into the corners to allow the continuous flow of people to enter. As the 5 kids entered the room I couldn't keep the tears from flowing. As I looked around the room, I could see that most everyone was feeling the same feelings I was at that moment. Heidi was amazingly strong and offered the prayer. It was wonderful, comforting, and perfect. I remember thinking afterward, "We should be comforting Heidi not her comforting us." Afterward, she asked all of us to please write down our memories of Dave so her children would know what kind of person, friend, brother, and son he was. So... This is for Lasca, Brogan, Joecee, Stryder, and Kaymin. I do admit it is for me also. I need to express my feelings and memories of him... it seems to be my way of healing. I want them to know the kind of big brother he was to me. Dave was 9 years older than me. To him I am sure I was a little pest. On the other hand I do think that as a 10 year old he liked me a little...I have evidence to prove it. On our family home movies he is the one spotting me as I take my first steps. He helps me up with a big smile and encourages me to keep trying. My earliest memories of Dave are those of a normal brother sister relationship... he teased me and I tattled on him. He would do various things like spear peanut butter on my nose, wipe mayonnaise on my glasses, and give me buttercups! He was a pro at those! Even though at the time I screamed and tattled I think I was secretly happy he was giving me attention. Dave and I were always at war. When I was about 13 or 14 I went through a "tree-hugger", "animal-rights-activist" kind of phase. At the time I wanted to be a National Geographic Photographer and help save the planet! To Dave... this put a big red target on my chest that said TEASE ME. I have so many examples of our wars but I will only describe a few. Each fall Dave would go hunting... I was appalled! I just didn't understand why someone would want to shoot one of God's creations. Dave would go out of his way to remind me that he was going to track and bring home the biggest buck. I would usually respond with some statistic I read from National Geographic on how he was a big reason for all the animals going extinct. (I pretended to know what I was talking about.) I remember one day after the hunt he said, "Jenny I have something to show you... come here. " I followed him, being my gullible self, he led me to the garage. My jaw dropped... there hanging from the rafters in the garage was a dead deer. He thought it was the funniest thing ever... I stormed out determined to never forgive him! In the spring every year we would prune the trees. We would pile all the branches in the middle of the garden and have a big bonfire. Remember again... my "save the earth" mind frame at this time. I remember Dave putting Harts' cups on the end of a stick and burning them. Again, my jaw dropped. How could he? Look at that black smoke going into the atmosphere! I watched as the cup melted and changed shape until little dripping fireballs of plastic dropped to the ground. I remember arguing over the blazing fire. How could my brother be the one person single handedly destroying the world?! I think it was about a year later I discovered I could never be a National Geographic Photographer because I would have to sleep alone in a tent in the wilderness for days. The thought of that life was too frightening. So I changed my career choice to teaching. Also, burning cups on the bonfire was just too much fun so my "save the earth" years passed. I still have never gone hunting with Dave but... I was willing to. He invited my husband Mark to go with him and I would have loved to go along. Dave would often ask me to tag along with his dates (I still can't figure out why) I would always say yes because it meant at least a snickers and a soda from Harts and if I was really lucky maybe even fast food. One time a girl in a bright red sports car pulled up to our house. Dave asked if me and my friend Katie if we would like to come along. Heck yes!! Look at that car. We stopped at Harts and as this girl went in to the store Dave looked back at me and Katie and said, "She's cute huh? Guess what, I 'm going to marry her!" I remember thinking what a crazy lovestruck brother I had. Dave and Heidi were engaged a few days later. The summer after I graduated from high school I worked construction with Dave. At the time he was running the blade (road grater) . He was so good at it. I don't say that just because I am his sister... everyone in the construction business knew Dave and his skills on any of the equipment, especially the blade. I would walk along side the blade and tell him to lift the blade up one notch or down a few as I followed the marking stakes the surveyors left. We would stay late in the hot summer night until he got it perfect. He always finished. He would never leave anything undone. At this time we were building the taxi way at the Salt Lake City Airport. We had a long commute home and we would eat star burst candy and usually grab a soda for the ride home. He would ask me about volleyball and tell me about the new things Lasca had just learned to do. Dave guarded me around the rough construction crowd. He was so respectful of me. Sometimes he had to take care of some lazy workers... he would tell me to go work on something and I could hear him cussing them out from a distance. He never used the "construction man language" around me. One day I was helping one of the other workers pick up these metal stakes. We had to use the forklift to gather them all. The kid would drive and I would put the stakes on the forks. I was bending down to pick up a stake and this kid drove over my ankle. The first words out of his mouth was, "Man I'm dead!" Here came Dave... (can you imagine!) he practically fired the kid... he was yelling at him saying, "you idiot you probably ruined her volleyball career." I assured Dave I was fine... he made me go to the doctor even though I didn't think I needed to. It felt nice to have someone stand up for me like Dave did. Mark and I moved to California to go to school and play volleyball for Cal State Northridge. After being in Northridge for 5 months Mark decided to be baptized. Dave and his family were there for one of the most special days in our lives. After the baptism we had a great time at the beach helping Lasca and Brogan collect shells. Three years ago Mark and I moved back to Utah. Dave was building his home at the time and Heidi had just had Kaymin the day before. We didn't expect Dave to help us move in but at 7:00 a.m. in the morning he called and said, " I have an hour or two so I am on my way up with the trailer to get you guys moved." I quickly woke Mark up and we went to work. That same day Dave, Mark and my dad poured the basement floor of his house. He always found a way to help us all. This past Christmas Dave and I both had a different idea about what we should do as a family for a gift exchange. We were both a little stubborn with our opinions. A few weeks before Christmas he called me and we had a heated conversation about the subject. I started to cry and told him I wished I still lived in California so I wouldn't have to worry about these kind of family problems. We ended our conversation and I went about my evening a little disgruntled. About an hour later (10:00 p.m. ) I heard a knock at the door. Dave and Heidi were standing on my porch. I opened the door and let them in. He handed me a treat he had picked up at the gas station and said, " I'm sorry I made you sad. I would never mean to do that." He gave me a big hug (a Kirby No No) and we had a great conversation and came to a resolution. I was so touched how he drove clear up to my house at night just to say sorry. He always had to make things right. I can't begin to explain my feelings about him while we sat at the hospital those two dreadful days. It was a roller coaster of not knowing what was happening, the realization of his condition, the choice for him to be a donor and then his death. The hardest part was riding with the smiling kids up the elevator on there way to say bye to their daddy. As I left them in the room with Heidi I walked outside into the hall and crumbled. The week following was exhausting and wonderful. We gathered as family and reflected on our memories of Dave. We laughed, cried and pondered about what his experience might have been like. We spent many late, late, late nights working on the celebration of his life and funeral. I felt closer to my siblings than ever before. We bonded and it was a great feeling. Lasca, Brogan, Joecee, Styder and Kaymin I want you to know that your dad was a great brother to me. He teased me a lot... he stood up for me when i needed someone to, he apologized to me, he cared about me, and he made me laugh. I will always remember him when I look at any of you. I love you all. Remember his legacy.

Capitol Reef and Goblin Valley
A Little Get Away Weekend

Andy planned a weekend trip to Capitol Reef and Goblin Valley. At the last minute Mark wasn't able to leave work early because of an out- of- town consultant. I always have a hard time canceling, so I decided to continue with my plans. I ended up leaving Mason with a very nice neighbor so Mark could pick him up after work. I was now baby less... oh so nice! ( I do feel very bad because Mason ended up getting a fever and Mark spent the whole weekend on the couch holding him... what a great husband!) The trip was great! Jacob was off playing with cousins, having a blast and I was able to give Iree some much needed mommy/daughter time.

Here are more pictures... this place is beautiful!

The Zoo
I had a neighbor mention that the zoo was having a free day... I am all for free day! I quickly packed up the kids and we spent an awesome day at the zoo. I don't think I will ever go to the zoo again in the summer it was too nice in early spring. The weather was perfect and all of the animals were out and alert. This was Mason's first time actually noticing the animals. He was loving it! The monkeys and the giraffes were his favorites.

Jacob and Nash loving the snake and bug displays.

Easter Egg Hunt

On Saturday we had a family easter egg hunt at Anna's parent's home. There was lots of candy and a few prize eggs. Mason picked up on the game quickly. Iree is always a little hesitant around so many people but as soon as I showed her some Dora eggs she went to town. Jacob of course, had no reservations and filled his basket full. He also found one of the prize eggs so he got to choose a stuffed animal.
I also want to explain the "Mason screaming" photos. He is quickly joining his sister in the tantrum phase and can throw one great fit.

Thanksgiving Point
We took a little trip to Thanksgiving Point with Michelle and her kids, Becky and her family and 3 of Heidi's kids. We all had a blast in the dinosaur museum and at the farm. I liked so many of the pictures I decided to do a slide show rather than upload all the pictures.

If you click on "view all images" it should make the pictures bigger on your screen.

Easter

This morning we were ready for church 1/2 hour early so I snapped a few pictures.

After church we went down to my mom's in Mapleton. The whole Kirby clan were all getting together along with My Uncle John, Aunt Sue, Becky and her family, Taylor and Patrick. These last two week since Dave died have been crazy. I have been down to Mapleton many, many, many times and the kids have been great. It is an hour drive and they usually catch a nap. Yesterday was no different.

Mason happened to catch a nap in church so he kept himself busy dumping noodles on his head.

She is so peaceful in sleep

I was a little worried about a stiff neck but he popped right up and played with the cousins.

Yes, Sad I Know
My First Concert

Todd had extra tickets for his Novell party at the Energy Solutions Arena in SLC. Todd, Anna, Heather, Chuck, Me, Michelle and Heidi all came. I think we all needed a night out. The comedian was Frank Caliendo the guy who impersonates Pres. Bush and John Madden. Collective Soul a group that became popular when I was in high school (10 years ago!!!) was putting on a concert after Frank.
The comedian was hilarious... we all needed a good laugh. The music was loud!!! I know it is kind of lame but after they played the two songs I know I text Anna and said "do you want to stay or go." 5 minutes later we were at Crown Burger Eating onion rings and milkshakes. Over all it was a fun night out.

The Farnworth's House

Mason and Sawyer at the Farnworth's
Sad but true... Mason is 8 months older and they are the same size. Actually Sawyer outweighs him by a few pounds.

My sister Julie lives in Mapleton near my parents. They have a party house!! The house is an older farmhouse that Ryan and Julie have remodeled and done a very nice job. They added this amazing porch outside that we have spent many hours relaxing on. The yard is huge with large shade trees, a tree house, swing set, fire pit, chickens and of course a nice area to set up a volleyball net or have a baseball game. The Farnworth's house is the kids favorite place to be.

When ever the family congregates we seem to end up at Julie's house. She and Ryan always are so open and throw together a nice BBQ for our rather large family.

Thanks Ryan and Julie

Here are a few more pictures of the fun stuff we do at the Farnworth's.

Anna trying out Kirby's new 2 wheeled skateboard.

Mom riding the scooter... she loved it. They do go fast.. . but mom has always like to go a little fast.
Julie helping Mason ride a scooter... He can do it pretty good the problem is the scooter weighs more than him... Please ignore the purple Dora helmet... the third child gets all the hand-me-downs .
Julie testing Kirby's skateboard.

Me taking my turn.

I Have a Climber!

So I came down the other day and found Mason climbing on the banister. I placed him in a little safer position and then snapped a picture. Lately he drags a stool everywhere and climbs up on everything. I have found him in his bathroom sink... he piled Iree's little chair on his stool and climbed on up. He is a little guy but he has an amazing amount of energy and climbing skills!!

Gotta Love Lasik

To make a long story short... Mark had Lasik about 2 months ago. When he went in he planned on having both eyes done at the same time. The first eye went well but the second eye gave the doctor a "little" trouble. I am going to spare you the gory details but the doctor told him it is the first time in 18,000 procedures that this has happened (lets just say "machine malfunction")!!! Of course it happens to Mark! He had to wait 1 month for the eye to heal before he could have the Lasik completed. He is very happy with the results now. Last night he was telling me, for the first time how beautiful the Utah mountains are. He could see the layers, details and the jaggedness of the peaks. Before, he only notice the outline and not the depth. I am trying to get up my courage to have it done. Sometime soon!

In Memory of Dave

My 37 year old brother Dave has gone to heaven!!!
I can't believe this has happened. He left his wife Heidi and his five kids Lasca-11, Brogan-10, Joecee-6, Stryder-4, Kaymin-2. I am hurting so bad. I think I can deal with Dave's death but I am having a hard time every time I think of the wonderful family he left behind.
Heidi was so strong yesterday. I know I would have crumbled but she held strong for those kids as they each said good bye to their dad. She made the hard decisions to be made in this horrible life event.

Dave's spirit is now in heaven... his body is going to save so many people today!!!
our family has been granted 3 amazing miracles... My brother Todd recovered from a broken back. He is still in a wheelchair but he has a sound mind and a wonderful family. My sister-in-law Wanda was in a car accident and suffered severe head trauma, the doctors said she would never function. She now has 4 children and you would never guess she had any type of accident. My mom had a heart attack and was gone... she came back to us. We prayed so hard for Dave but we didn't get the miracle this time. But... so many families are going to have miracles happen today because of him.

Today I am numb... I have so many thoughts about my brother Dave. From the mayonnaise he used to spear on my glasses to the heart felt apology he made to me recently...

My goal now is to make sure these 5 kids and Heidi are loved, cared for, and return to as normal life as possible. I know this trial is going to be the most difficult thing we have been through but we will make it through. Heidi is one of the strongest people I know. She has made her kids strong. From the day Lasca was born Heidi has been so honest with her kids. I admit at times I thought she would tell them too much... She has given them the gift. The gift to be able to express them selves. This will help them through the years. My heart was torn out as Lasca laid on her dads chest and talked to him and said goodbye. She told him that she didn't want him to go!!! She loved him!! But if this had to happen she told Dave that they would be OK. What an amazing 11 year old.

At work Wednesday Dave was pulling a trailer it came loose and hit the back of his truck. We are not sure exactly what happened... we are assuming he had some whiplash. He was complaining of a severe headache on Thursday and Friday. But no one thought much of it because he had Bronchitis. This trauma to his neck caused a dissection (a small cut in the basil artery in the back of his neck.) As it was healing itself it was forming a clot in the artery.
Saturday morning Heidi heard him stumble out of bed and scream. He was dizzy and couldn't walk. Heidi helped him to the bathroom, he fell and Heidi dragged him to the bed. Brogan had come up because of the fall and called 911. The ambulance came and took him to American Fork Hospital were they did a CAT scan. In the CAT scan we think the clot came loose and caused the most severe stroke. They transfered him to a bigger hospital at Utah Valley. They found a large clot in the worst spot possible, the basil artery. It was cutting of blood flow to his brain stem and both hemispheres of the cerebrum (the lower back part of the brain). The doctors were able to remove the clot but the damage was too severe. Sunday evening his fight was over and he was declared brain dead.

I loved my brother Dave. He was real, genuine, fun, and a big tease. He loved his wife and kids and they loved him. I will miss him so much. I can't believe that our gatherings will be missing one of its greatest entertainers. We will make sure his legacy lives on through these 5 wonderful kids. Heidi is strong... there are going to be huge struggles ahead but we will face them day by day.

I Love You Dave!! I will Miss You!! Until we meet again in Heaven...

I just completed The Kite Runner yesterday. I loved the book, hated the book, and was a little disturbed by the book. As I finished, I didn't know if I could recommend it to anyone. I was a little angry with the main character and how selfish he was though most of the book.
I thought more of all the questions and thoughts the book stirred in me and decided The Kite Runner does teach some great lessons. I was reminded of how cruel young children can be to each other at times. How I need to be aware of what my children might be facing and to help them understand the appropriate way to treat people and defend people. Selfless, honest people will receive the greater reward in the end!
I also learned a great deal about the Afghani people and their horrific struggles over the last 30 years. I have a greater compassion for the people of that society (especially the women.)
Over all I have decided I will recommend the book to those who like to learn of other cultures and like to dig deep for some meaningful life lessons.

Awe...
Iree was not feeling well today. It takes a lot to slow this girl down. Some of you see the shy, sweet little girl who wont leave her mom's side. Well, that is just an artificial Iree. She is unstoppable, constantly on the move, from one game to the next, get my drift. I spend most of my day keeping up with her. Today she laid on the couch and watched cartoons (which she never does) and she helped me pick pictures to put on the blog. In between reading her a few stories and doing only one puzzle today I was able to clean the house, do most of my laundry and catch up on blogging. So when I usually complain about a day with sick kids... this one was pretty nice.

And No... I don't have a leopard print couch... it's a blanket.
